Unexpected & Blessed

I know, I promised to discuss Looming American Serfdom but something so unexpected occurred today that I must share.

I drove to the condominium where I rent a unit to pick up the rent check. My tenant has been renting the unit for about four years. When I spoke with the security guard, she disclosed a friend of the tenant delivered the check.

When I opened the envelope, there was a note from this friend. “[] is in the hospital . . . and won’t be able to write you a check for his rent. I made this out for $1500. I’m not sure what the exact amount should be. If this [is] insufficient, please let me know and I will send you the remainder.”

I was stunned. My tenant’s friend paid the rent. It was more than sufficient since the rent is $1400 (of course I mailed him a check today for $100 overage).

We both hope the tenant has a speedy and complete recovery.

Meanwhile, I am blessed. I have the January rent thanks to my tenant’s amazing, thoughtful friend.

Happy New Year 2018

The Money Heifer is back!

Have you made your financial resolutions? Is your priority to pay off debt, build an emergency fund, save for your children’s college education, pay off your mortgage, pay off your credit card debt, stop using credit cards, tracking your spending? All of these are great. But don’t overlook the larger picture, the tax laws passed by Congress and signed by the President which are effective today.

If you are not part of the wealthiest 1 percent, those changes in the tax laws for you and for me are temporary, not permanent. Second, the taxes for you and me are peanuts compared to all the breaks businesses receive. Third, if you followed the news, you know these tax cuts will create greater deficits. And how will this deficit be addressed? With cuts in the social safety net: Medicaid, Social Security (retirement), Social Security (disability).

Even if you believe slashing the social safety net is a good thing, please note what is on the horizon: Looming American Serfdom.

What’s this? More in my next blog.
